Born Lübeck 8. 8. 1830, died Freiburg im Breisgau 9. 6. 1900. 1847–1851 studied theology, philology and history at Leipzig and Berlin; 1851 doctorate at Berlin. 1852 named Gymnasium teacher at Katharineum in Lübeck. 1877/78 prof. ext., 1878–1884 prof. ord. in universal history at Univ. of Palermo; 1884–1897 prof. of ancient history at Univ. of Naples.
