Born Berlin 29. 11. 1858, died Florence 19. 1. 1935. 1876–1880 studied at the Univ. of Berlin (classical philology, ancient history, archaeology, with Ernst Curtius, Henri Jordan and Theodor Mommsen et al.), 1880 doctorate there for a diss. on Varro.
