Br., 1895/96 in Munich, 1896 in Berlin; doctorate 1900, habil. 1903, Berlin. From 1903, priv.-doz. at Breslau. 1906 prof. ext., from 1907 prof. ord. at Kiel. 1935 forced out of professorship. Emigrated to Oxford 1939. Back in Berlin from 1956.
