German-Dutch art critic, philologist and antiquarian. Born Heidelberg 1589, died Wind-sor 1677, in the house of his nephew Isaac Vossius. Latin school at Dordrecht; 1608 student at Leiden; 1616 pastor in Hillegersburg (NL). 1620 by way of Paris to England, active at Oxford from 1621 with Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel. Living alternately in the Netherlands and England from 1642.
