German classical philologist. Born Dresden 7. 7. 1894, died Munich 26. 1. 1968. Studied at Tübingen from 1914, then Berlin (from 1915) and Marburg (from 1920). Doctorate 1921, then assistantship and 1923 habil., all Marburg. 1923–1925 assistant and librarian at Berlin. 1925–1930 prof. ord. in classical archaeology at Hamburg; 1930–1946 prof. ord. at Leipzig; 1947–1962 prof. ord. at Munich. 1956/57 rector of the univ. there.
