Doctorate Leipzig 1920/21. 1922/23 assistant at Univ. of Heidelberg; 1923/24 DAI travel scholarship. 1925–1931 assistant and conservator at Martin-von-Wagner-Museum in Würzburg. 1925 habil. at Würzburg; 1931–1933 prof. ext. at Jena; 1933–1940 prof. ord. at Frankfurt; from 1941 prof. ord. in Bonn; 1954 vice-president of DAI; retired 1966.
