Born Paris 17. 1. 1837, died there 9. 12. 1883. 1857 licentiate in law and prize for numismatics at Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres [1]. 1860 excavations at Eleusis; 1862–1872 junior librarian at Institut de France. From 1874 prof. of archaeologist at Bibliothèque nationale, Paris. 1879–1883 excavations at Tarentum. 1881 member of Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres.
