German philologist and Indo-European scholar. Born Strasbourg 6. 10. 1889, died Zurich 15. 7. 1977. Son of the Indologist Ernst Leumann. Studied Indo-Germanic (Indo-European) studies, classical philology and Oriental studies at the Univ. of Strasbourg from 1908, then also at Berlin (1909/10) and Göttingen (1910); 1914 doctorate at Strasbourg, then a soldier in World War I.
