Studied at École normale supérieure de Sèvres; Agrégation de Lettres classiques 1965; 1970–1975 assistant in Greek history at Univ. of Strasbourg, then assistant at École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS); 1977 Thèse de doctorat with Jean-Pierre Vernant. 1981–1994 Directeur d’études and from 1987 prof. of history and anthropology of the Greek polis at EHESS. Severe stroke 1994.
