School in Altona; studied ancient history, classical philology, archaeology and Oriental studies at Hamburg, Kiel and Göttingen. 1923 doctorate at Göttingen with Ulrich Kahrstedt [1]; 1924 habil. at Kiel [2]. Thereafter one-year scholarship with DAI at Athens. 1927 succeeded Johannes Hasebroek as prof. ext., then from 1947 prof. ord. of ancient history at Zurich.
