German classical archaeologist and philologist. Born Kiel 22. 6. 1835, died Strasbourg 13. 8. 1910. School at Kiel; studied classical philology and archaeology at Leipzig, Berlin and Kiel. Doctorate Kiel 1857, on Horace. 1859/60 travel scholarship from Instituto di Corrispondenza Archeologica; 1861 habil. at Kiel. 1862 prof. ext. at Greifswald; from 1865 prof. ord. in classical archaeology at Tübingen; from 1872 prof. ord. at Strasbourg.
