Scottish philosopher and historian. Born Shotts (Lanarkshire) 22. 6. 1735, died Milheug (Lanarkshire) 30. 5. 1801. School at Hamilton; studied at Glasgow. 1760 qualified as an advocate. 1761–1800 Regius Prof. of Civil Law at Glasgow.

Work and influence
