Born Paris 19. 7. 1759, died there 14. 8. 1818. 1788 co-founder of the Société linnéenne de Paris (Linnaeus Society). 1792/93 and 1795–1816 editor of the Magasin encyclopédique. Arrested 1793/94 because of his opposition to the Jacobins. From 1795, successor to Jean-Jacques Barthélemy as conservator at the Cabinet des médailles of the Bibliothèque nationale, Paris. Public archaeology lectures there form 1796. 1804–1806 tour of southern France, 1811–1813 of Italy.
