From 1804 studied classics etc. at Breslau, 1816–1818 classical philology at Berlin with Philipp Karl Buttmann and August Boeckh; 1817 doctorate. 1818 schoolteacher at Breslau. 1819 appointed prof. ext. in classical philology and archaeology of art at Univ. of Göttingen; 1823 prof. ord. there. 1832 Hofrat and member of the Göttinger Sozietät der Wissenschaften.
