American classical philologist and comparatist. Born Oakland, California, 20. 6. 1902, died Los Angeles 3. 12. 1935. 1919–1923 studied classics at Univ. of California at Berkeley, from 1924 at the Sorbonne in Paris, where he took his doctorate in 1928 (Docteur ès lettres). Also assistant prof. at Drake Univ., Des Moines, Iowa. From 1929 instructor, from 1932 assistant prof. at Harvard; 1933–1935 field studies on improvised oral heroic poetry in what was then Yugoslavia.
