Doctorate 1869 and habil. 1870, Kiel; prof. ext. there from 1872. From 1876, prof. of classical philology at Jena, 1878–1885 at Tübingen, 1886 at Leipzig and, still in the same year, at Heidelberg. R. was a student of Friedrich Wilhelm Ritschl, Otto Jahn, Alfred von Gutschmid and Otto Ribbeck, as well as a close friend of Friedrich Nietzsche.
