Born Kiel 22. 8. 1858, died Munich 13. 2. 1940. 1875 studied classical philology at Göttingen, 1876 Bonn, 1878 Berlin, 1879 Greifswald; 1880 doctorate and 1884 habil., both from Bonn. 1887 prof. ext., from 1888 prof. ord. in classical philology at Rostock, from 1893 at Giessen, from 1897 at Strasbourg, from 1902 at Göttingen, from 1909 at Freiburg, from 1914 at Strasbourg, where he was rector 1914/15. 1919–1929 Munich.
