Sigonius, Carolus

Sigonio/Sigone, Carlo. Italian Humanist and philologist. Born Modena 1522/24, died there 27. 8. 1584. Initial legal training at Modena with Lodovico Castelvetro and Lodovico del Monte, also studying Greek with and Francesco Porto. 1538–1542 studied philosophy and medicine at Bologna and Pavia. Succeeded Porto as prof. of Greek at Modena in 1546, 1552 prof. at the Scuola di San Marco in Venice. 1560 prof. of rhetoric at Padua; prof. at Bologna from 1563 until his death in 1584.
