From 1936, read New Testament studies, Jewish studies and Graeco-Roman religion at Harvard and Jerusalem; 1948 doctorate in Jerusalem; 1957 doctorate in theology at Harvard. 1950–1955 assistant prof. at Brown Univ., Rhode Island, 1956/57 at Drew Univ., New York; 1957–1985 prof. at Columbia Univ., New York.
