Latin Spanhemius; Swiss numismatist, philologist and diplomat. Born Geneva 7. 12. 1629, died London 7. 11. 1710. Studied at Leiden; 1651 prof. of eloquence in Geneva and member of the Grand Council there. 1656–1661 princely tutor in Heidelberg; 1661–1665 tour of Italy. Various diplomatic missions and court positions from 1665, e.g. in Cologne and Berlin.
