Studied classical philology at Jena, Leipzig and Berlin; 1845 doctorate at Jena; 1848 tour of Italy and habil. at Jena. 1850 prof. ext. at Univ. of Jena; 1852 tour of France and Belgium. 1855–1879 prof. ord. in classical archaeology at the Univ. of Heidelberg (rector 1873/74); 1871/72 tour of Greece and Asia Minor.
