German classical philologist. Born Friedrich Wilhelm T., Kirchscheidungen near Freyburg an der Unstrut, 17. 6. 1784, died Munich 25. 2. 1860. Studied theology at Leipzig and Göttingen. Graduated from Göttingen 1807, immediately taking habil. there 1808. Schoolteacher in Munich from 1809. 1811 founded the philological seminar for teacher training there. From 1814 member of the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften. From 1826 prof. of eloquence and ancient literature at Univ. of Munich. 1829/30 and 1847/…
