British archaeologist. Born Robert Eric Mortimer W., Glasgow, 10. 9. 1890, died Leatherhead (Surrey) 22. 7. 1976. 1899–1904 school in Bradford, from 1907 studied classics at Univ. College, London (UCL). 1910 BA, 1912 MA 1913–1920 employed at the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (interruption for military service in World War I). Doctorate in archaeology at London 1920.
