Studied law 1926 in Tübingen, 1927 in Munich, 1928 in Göttingen; 1929 Referendarexamen in Celle; 1930 doctorate in Freiburg with Fritz Pringsheim; 1933 habil. there. After teaching and locum posts 1939 prof. ord. in Leipzig. After interruption by war, from 1948 prof. of Roman law, civil law and the history of modern civil law at Freiburg; 1953–1973 prof. at Göttingen.
