German Christian archaeologist. Born Eiglau (Silesia, now Dziełów, Poland) 22. 8. 1857, died Rome 10. 3. 1944. After one year studying philosophy at Innsbruck (1878) and military service, he studied theology at Innsbruck from 1880. Holy orders 1883. Lived at Rome from 1884 for the rest of his life. 1903 Papal pronotary and member of the Papal Catacomb Commission (PCAS). 1926–1936 honorary prof. of Christian iconography at the Papal Institute for Christian Archaeology (PIAC). 1892 honorary doctorate from the Univ. of Münster.
