Studied classics and theology at New College, Oxford 1899–1904. 1905–1907 Assistant Keeper at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. 1908–1912 excavations in Nubia; 1912–1920 head of excavations at Karkemish (eastern Turkey), 1921–1922 at Tell el-Amarna (Egypt), 1922–1934 at Ur (Iraq) and Alalaḫ (Turkey) 1936–1949. Knighted 1935.
