A. ‘Renaissance Humanism’ as a historical and cultural concept

The double term used in the title of this volume should be understood as denoting a historical concept in its first element and a cultural one in its second. It should thus be read as connoting ‘Humanism during the Renaissance’. Regardless of its original sense, therefore, the term ‘Renaissance’ (Italian rinascità and rinascimento) is used here not in the sense of a ‘period of rebirth of pagan Antiquity’, but simply to designate the first phase of …
