The name Levante denotes the region of the Iberian Peninsula on the east coast between the Iberus/Ebro River to the north and the Segura to the south. Mountain chains border this flat, fertile landscape to the west, separating it from the high plateau of the southern meseta, to which only a few river valleys (e.g. Segura, Júcar, Vinalopó) permit one to cross relatively easily.
