The ancient and modern city of Huelva (Roman Onuba) lies near the Atlantic outflows of the Tinto and Odiel Rivers in what is now western Andalusia. It was an important  harbour from early historical times [11]. Since the location could be reached easily from the rich mineral reserves with their polymetallic ores in the coastal hinterland ( Riotinto, Tharsis; Economy 3.5.), it thus was destined to function as an export harbour.
