Born in 340 in Trier as the son of praefectus praetorio Galliarum holding office (PLRE 1, Ambrosius 1). After his father's death, his mother moved with her three children to Rome, where A. received an aristocratic education (Paulinus, Vita Ambr. 5), which enabled him to pursue a career in the administrative machine. In 374 he held the office of consularis Aemilia et Liguriae seated in Milan, when an argument erupted over the successor to the local Bishop Auxentius, who had died.
