Important town in Picenum in the Tronto (ancient Truentus) valley on the  via Salaria , modern Ascoli Piceno. According to Fest. 235,16f., it was founded by the  Sabini. Following its defeat by the Romans in 268 BC (Eutr. 2,16), it became a civitas foederata. The uprising of A. in 90 BC was the beginning of the  Social War. A. was besieged and captured (Vell.
