Sabine city on the left bank of the Tiber, 24 miles from Rome on the via Salaria. C. is the hometown of two Roman kings (Titus Tatius, Numa Pompilius), the designation of the Romans as Quirites (Str. 5,3,1), and also the name of the mons Quirinalis (Varro, Ling. 5,51). The Romans conquered C. under M'. Curius Dentatus (290 BC). As a municipium, C. was incorporated into the tribus Sergia. Sulla and Caesar deduced coloniae to C. It belonged to regio IV (Ov. Fast. 2,135; Str. 5,3,1) and was called C. Sabini in the imperial period…
