I. Definition

Doric Ális, Elean Wális, probably ‘valley’, cf. Mycenaean e-nwa-ri-jo (= *en-walios), ethnicon Ἠλεῖοι (αλεῖοι ‘valley dwellers’), the north-western coastal region of the Peloponnese.
