In the Republican period in Rome the records (also  commentarii ) that a magistrate made or had made regarding the orders decreed by him ( acta ). They were personally archived by the magistrate after the end of his period in office (Cic. Sull. 42). From the 3rd cent. AD the term gesta superseded the expression commentarii for the official records. Apart from gesta the word cottidiana occurs in the same sense.
