(Hortanum, Plin. HN 3,52). Etruscan town on a volcanic mountain to the right of the Tiber, modern Orte; a place of commercial importance where several roads meet. Settled since the 6th cent. BC (necropolis of Le Piane), municipium after the  Social War [3], tribus Stellatina [1. 85]. Connected by a bridge with the vicus of the river port on the left bank of the river; recorded as Castellum Amerinum in the Tab. Peut. Remains of quays, warehouses, baths.
