(Hebrew Jirm jāhū). Personal name and title of the book of the Bible written by the author of the same name. In several Haggadic sources ( Haggadah), the name of the second of the great prophets is linked with the destruction of  Jerusalem which took place during his lifetime. The possible meaning ‘may God exalt’ is uncertain. J. was probably born around 650 BC during the reign of king Jošija.
