(Μερόη/Meróē: Hdt. 1,29). Graeco-Latin rendition of the Meroitic M/Bedewi. Centre of the kingdom of Kush (Napatan period: late 9th cent. - c. 270 BC; Meroitic period: c. AD 270 BC - 350, Nubia), between the 5th and 6th cataracts of the Nile, near present-day Begrawiyah.
