Preface to the whole work

The NEW PAULY is a Reallexikon or encyclopaedia of the ancient world. It is supposed to be a practical reference work for everyday use, also to those, who like the classic German authors Herder, Goethe and Schiller "only know a very modest amount of Greek" (W. v. Humboldt, 1795). To remain readable and clear it offers simple paraphrases, quotes in translation, as well as numerous illustrations, survey maps and tables.
