Tutelage played an important part in both Athenian (cf. epitropos ) and Roman law (cf. tutela ). It applied not only in respect of infants and impubes ('those under the age of discretion') not under the patria postestas ('paternal power'), but also in a wider context as a gender-based tutelage in respect of women ( Kyrios [II], Tutela, [1 III]).
