Located on the east coast of the island of Crete, the Minoan settlement of Z. extended from the building of Ano Z. in the western hills to the bay with the harbour and the palace of Kato Z. It had been settled as early as the late Neolithic Period and the Prepalatial Period (c. 2600-2000 BC, low chronology), as is indicated by finds on the cliffs of Kato Kastellas above the gorge of Z. and by Early Minoan burials in the caves of the so-called 'gorge of the dead'.
