The hierarchy of the senses has been largely established over the course of history. According to Walter Benjamin in his essay Das Kunstwerk im Zeitalter seiner technischen Reproduzierbarkeit (The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction), “Over long periods of history, the mode of human sense perception has changed along with the rest of human existence.
