Reduced version of an exhibition on Judaism and art in the Middle Ages, originally shown in Austria and Germany (and arranged by Kurt and Ursula Schubert). The present exhibition focused exclusively on medieval Hebrew manuscripts, with most exhibits being enlarged photographs of such items. Foreword by Kurt Schubert. Introduction to Hebrew illuminated manuscripts by Bezalel Narkiss. Material divided according to: Haggadot, Bibles, Mahzorim and Miscellanies, legal and secular books, Jewish customs reflected in Hebrew manuscripts, and Judaism in Christian art. Descriptive entries. 157 items. |

Two sections that were originally to be included in the current show, “Midrashic and Rabbinic Legends in Art” and “History of the Jews of Austria in the Middle Ages”, were shown as separate exhibitions. Another section, “800 Years of Austrian Jewry” was also to be included, but was reserved for future exhibition at Beit Hatfutsot, Tel Aviv (dates unknown). |
