A monumental exhibition and 4-volume catalog on the material culture (domestic and religious) of German burghers, 12th–17th C. Vols. 1 & 2 comprise the exhibition catalog, with separate sections on: Early Settlements, The Development of Cities (each city discussed separately), House and Family, Piety and Education, Craft and Trade, Town Hall and Politics, and Church Art of the Middle Ages. Jewish life and objects, including a rare Opferstein (altar stone) from the synagogue of Celle and a kiddush cup with a coin of Herzog August of Braunschweig and Lüneburg embedded into its bottom are described in “Jüdisches Leben” [Jewish Life] (vol. 1, cat. nos. 412–446, pp. 500–526).
