Description

A monumental exhibition and 4-volume catalog on the material culture (domestic and religious) of German burghers, 12th–17th C. Vols. 1 & 2 comprise the exhibition catalog, with separate sections on: Early Settlements, The Development of Cities (each city discussed separately), House and Family, Piety and Education, Craft and Trade, Town Hall and Politics, and Church Art of the Middle Ages. Jewish life and objects, including a rare Opferstein (altar stone) from the synagogue of Celle and a kiddush cup with a coin of Herzog August of Braunschweig and Lüneburg embedded into its bottom are described in “Jüdisches Leben” [Jewish Life] (vol. 1, cat. nos. 412–446, pp. 500–526). Vols. 3 & 4 contain 57 essays in 5 sections: City Genesis and Urban Development; Economy; Life and Living in the City, Community, and Church and Piety. “Juden in niedersächsischen Städten” [Jews in Towns in Lower Saxony] by Peter Freimark is included in vol. 3, p. 457 ff.

Description

This exhibition was the final installment in a series of major exhibitions on German and European history. It was the only one to focus on the middle class.
