The history of Newton’s oldest congregation and synagogue, and some of the community’s notable families and their businesses. Separate section on the synagogue building, with particular attention to its bimah and Torah ark. These furnishings were carved in 1924 by Ukrainian-born Samuel Katz, who was responsible for at least 6 Torah arks in the Greater Boston area made in the 1920’s and ’30s. No itemized listing.
