Description

A traveling exhibition of 50 photographs of Turkish Jewish objects, rites, buildings, and people, exhibited in celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Jews being welcomed into the Ottoman Empire after being expelled from Spain. Brief introduction to the history of Turkey’s Jews, emphasizing their harmonious co-existence with the local Muslim population. Material presented in four sections: Turkish Nationalism within the Jewish Community (objects bearing Turkish national symbols), From Generation to Generation: Continuity of Religious Tradition (synagogues and rites of passage), Diversity and Continuity of the Turkish-Jewish Community (synagogues and their items), and Neighborhood and Community Life (Jewish secular buildings and individuals). Two videos were also included in the show: “Trees Cry for Rain: A Sephardic Journey” (the life and experiences of Rachel Amado Bortnick) and film footage of the costumes, textiles and objects shown at the Magnes Museum’s 1989 exhibition “Embellished Lives. Customs and Costumes of the Jewish Community of Turkey” (#1037). Descriptive entries. 50 items.
