A small exhibition of Judaica, Jewish-related objects and antiquities from Sigmund Freud’s personal collection. Principal among them is a medieval Hanukkah lamp (preserved in the Freud Museum in London) and two kiddush cups (whereabouts unknown). Preface by Lynn Gamwell on the “discovery” of these items in historical photographs of Freud’s study, and their subsequent exhibition. Essay “The Purloined Kiddush Cups: Reopening the Case on Freud’s Jewish Identity” (Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi) describes the objects and their possible significance in understanding Freud’s relationship with Judaism. Extensive entries, particularly for the Hanukkah lamp, by Susan Braunstein and Lynn Gamwell. 15 items.

This exhibition was designed as a supplement to the traveling exhibition “Sigmund Freud Antiquities: Fragments from a Buried Past”. Although the antiquities exhibition was widely-circulated in the United States, 1989–1992, the Judaica items were not discovered by Gamwell until 1991, and were thus published separately and shown only at the Jewish Museum New York.
