Description

The history, character and context of the Jewish community in ancient Rome. Four main themes framed the exhibition: the Jewish Community of Rome (its synagogues, religious life, women’s role in the synagogue), the Jews as Roman Citizens, Roman Jews and Judaean Jews, and Rome in Rabbinic Thought. Also includes the essay “The Synagogue of Ostia and its Torah Shrine” (Steven Fine and Miriam Della Pergola). Descriptive entries. 82 items.

Description

This exhibition opened only a few months after Israel and the Vatican formally established diplomatic relations, and represents the first cultural exchange from the Vatican to the State of Israel.
