Description

The phenomenon and impact of Court Jewry in the Germanic lands. Six in-depth essays cover the history of Court Jews (Yosef Kaplan), their involvement in economics and politics (Michael Graetz), their portrayal in Glückl von Hameln’s writings (Natalie Zemon Davis), and some outstanding figures: Alexander David of Braunschweig (Ralf Busch), Esther Liebmann (Deborah Hertz), and Mayer Amschel Rothschild and his sons (Fritz Backhaus). The final essay “Melding Worlds: Court Jews and the Arts of the Baroque” (Richard I. Cohen and Vivian B. Mann) examines the role of the Court Jew as patron of the arts, the revival of Hebrew manuscript illumination in this period, the use of art as propaganda (exemplified by the case of Jud Süß Oppenheimer), the influence of Court Jews on their communities and those who served them, etc. Detailed descriptive entries. 271 items.
