Description

Ceremonial and folk objects used for the celebration of Jewish life cycle events. These objects, drawn from the Museum’s collection of some 800 treasures, were supplemented by original contemporary artworks, and family photographs. Exhibits described and displayed according to life cycle events: Marriage, Birth, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, The Torah and Education, and Death. No itemized listing.

Description

This exhibition was drawn from the 1979 exhibition “Rites of Passage” [#542]. The exhibitions shared only one object in common: an 18th-century Eastern European wedding cane that contains poles to uphold the chuppah (from the Obermayer Collection). The cane is now housed in the Rodeph Shalom Congregation, Philadelphia, USA.
