Description

Books and manuscripts from libraries that have been preserved within historic country houses cared for by the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty. These libraries, along with the estates’ other rich contents (pictures, furniture, tapestries and silver), provide insight into the general phenomenon of the Country House Library and the particular interests and occupations of the home’s former inhabitants. Two Judaica items: a pilgrimage guide to the Holy Land, Bernhard von Breydenbach’s “Peregrinatio in Terram Sanctam”, Lyon, 1488 (p. 60, no. 13), and an illuminated Haggadah by Joseph Leipnik, Hamburg, 1740 (p. 126, no. 72). In-depth descriptive entries. 122 items.
